Introduction: All About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Michaela MosesThis is my junior year at OU.  While I am hoping it will be an exciting fall semester, I’m really hoping that it will fly by! Why? Because I’m studying abroad in the spring, that’s why! I am (hopefully) doing the OU in Arezzo program and am beyond excited for it.  My application is submitted and now all I can do is wait, so let’s move on to more that will let you get to know me!

I grew up as a military brat.  My father is a (now retired) pilot in the Air Force.  We moved to a new state every 2 to 4 years, but we also moved several times within the state while we tried to find/build our homes.  As such, my family has always been the most important thing to me.  Friends, things, places – they come and go, but my family has always been there for me.  This includes my dogs.  I have two dogs, a Bernese Mountain dog named Sherlock and Moose, a German shorthaired pointer mix.  Personally, I don’t think that life could be complete without a dog.

As you already know, I love the water.  I have been working for the YMCA for three years now, alongside a wide variety of interesting people and patrons.  I am a teacher, coach, and lifeguard. Teaching kids how to swim can be both incredibly stressful and unbelievably entertaining.  I’ve had kids who screamed in fear for the entire class and kids who screamed “Look mom I’m swimming” for the entire class (neither of which is entirely enjoyable when it’s done within inches of your ear)!  However, when you get one of those kids who listens to everything you say and gives you a hug at the end of every class, it makes up for all the… rambunctious children.

Lifeguarding is another beast altogether.  Combine the hot, humid air of an indoor pool with the old people who constantly complain about the water temperature or your choice of music and it almost always results in a rather cranky lifeguard.  But just as with the lessons, you do get those patrons who are just so nice and friendly that they can make even the worst day into a good one.  ESPECIALLY if they bring food with them.

Outside of work and school, I love to watch movies, read, hang with friends, and eat.  My favorite movies are pretty much all the Marvel movies, with the Captain Americas and the Avengers being at the top.  I used to read a lot, but with school and work, my reading time has definitely been limited.  I have done several 5ks with my friends, including the Mud Run this summer, which was definitely one of my favorites! Slogging through mud alongside a friend and hundreds of other people is surprisingly entertaining.  Beyond that, I just LOVE to eat.  I’m not particularly picky as to what I’m eating as long as it’s good.  In fact, food is how my friends typically get me to go places.  The promise of food will get me to do and go just about anywhere they want.  And like most college students, free food is always amazing.  Most recently, I’ve gotten addicted to a restaurant in Midwest City called the Creperie and European Cafe.  It is delicious!

Well, I hope that this helped you get to know me a little better! If you have any questions, just let me know! I would be more than happy to answer them!

  1. Nice to meet you, Michaela! How exciting that you get to do the OU in Arezzo program next semester~ I was interested in studying abroad there and taking organic chemistry, but I didn’t get the chance to. I hope you have a blast and make lots of memories there.

I agree that everyone needs a dog in their life! Dogs bring liveliness to your day and bring the family closer together.

I love water too haha! I’m not good at swimming, but there’s just something about the feeling of floating in the water. It’s very relaxing! Have you ever swam competitively (like on a school team or something)?

Yes~ Marvel movies are the best!! I LOVE the first Avengers movie AND Guardians of the Galaxy. I actually just watched Avengers: Age of Ultron today, but I feel like it was a bit lackluster compared to the first one… :( Have you seen it?

  2. I actually swam competitively off and on growing up. I swam on several independent or USA teams before I got to high school. I went to state with my Relay team my senior year of high school, in fact. Compared to the other people I swam with, I was more of an average speed, but I loved it and that was all that mattered to me!

I have seen AoU! I actually liked it, but I mostly liked all the humor that it had! Despite the darkness of the movie, it had a surprising amount of humor to it! Have you watched Agents of Shield? It's a great show to watch alongside the movies!

  3. Hi Michaela! It is very nice to get to know you. As you already know, I too am a Junior. I have always wanted to take a class abroad but the engineering classes are set up in such ways that I never had the chance to. So I am happy that you are getting the chance to go!!

Me and my family had a swimming pool at the house when we moved in and I was in it pretty much all day everyday. Then it became too much of a hassle to take care of it so we had it filled but I miss it everyday. Now we are looking to buy another house with a pool in it and we will have people to take care of it so I am really looking forward to spending time in the pool!!

My favorite movies are Marvels and Universals. I think they make the best movies. Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and furious 7 are by far the best movies I have seen so far (I'm sure there are others but those are on my mind right now).

Well anyway, it was great to meet you!

  4. Hi Michaela,

First off, love your theme and background of your blog! It's cool that you come from a military family. I always wonder what it would have been like to have to move around so often but I like how you said your family has been the constant in the midst of all the moving. Family is extremely important to me, too (also, your dogs are precious!) Another thing, I love watching movies too and Marvel movies are always a good choice. :)

    Nice to meet you!

    Christine

  5. I do agree that life isn’t complete without having a dog. Its also really cool that you’re going to study abroad, I’ve always wanted to do that but things get in the way and I don’t know if I can at this point. I see that you have done a mud run too, it is really fun to run obstacles in the mud, except last time my shoes kept coming off I was dead last, but I still did all the obstacles. It’s nice to meet you and hopefully we can get to know each other better and bounce story ideas off each other.

  6. Dog people are definitely the best kind of people! Being away from my puppies is probably the only thing I don't like about going to school here! I think it's cool that you run 5k's. I've never run one but I really want to try the color run. I had a friend that went to Arezzo and they loved it! Hopefully you get to go I'm sure you would enjoy it as well!

  7. Hi Michaela!
That is so cool that you will be studying abroad! Earlier in my college career I considered it, but it just did not seem to work with my schedule. However, a lot of my friends have done the Arezzo program and really loved it!
That is awesome that you work with kids! My mom has always worked with kids, and watching her my whole life I came to understand and believe that it takes a person with a very patient heart to be able to successfully work with and deal with children.
Good luck this semester and I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  8. When I was reading through your introduction, I was really surprised to see all of the things that we have in common. I too have a dad who was a pilot in the Air force (he flew the AWACS planes) and we also moved a ton. Plus, I love that you love dogs. That's basically my favorite thing about people. Nice to meet you!

  9. Michaela,

First off I love your hair! I think that it looks really good on. I have recently gone to shoulder length hair and before that it was almost to my bottom so it was an extreme change but I don't know if I could ever have the courage to get a pixie cut even though I think they are so pretty. Kudos to you and I am slightly jealous!
I cannot imagine having to move around so much. I have only moved once and I was not a big fan of it. I have recently moved out of my parents home but I don't think that really counts, haha.
I think that your blog theme also reflects on a lot that you mentioned in your post. The water atmosphere is very calming and soothing. I may have to come to a lesson some time though, I still do not know how to swim :(. It was nice to meet you!

  10. Hello Michaela!
Yay! We are halfway through the class this week! I hope your semester is running smoothly! How neat to have your family in the military and move around a lot. My dad was in the Coast Guard, but he was not active when I was little. But the photos of all the neat places he went are awesome. I bet you got to see neat places with your family. I always try to take my kiddo new places so she can see all the neat stuff everywhere.

I think that is so cool that you are a lifeguard. I can not swim well at all. I am terrified of water in my face. So you are way cool in my book! I had to take my kiddo to swim class to learn to swim because of my issues. Without a lifeguard she would not be able to swim, and actually she is a really great swimmer!

The photo of your dogs is adorable. I see so much character in their cute faces. I love animals. Every week I get to see all these cute pets! I think I may put up one of my cats.

  11. Hi Michaela!
Were you able to get in to the Arezzo program? I hope so, it sounds like so much fun! I love your hair, it is so edgy and cute! I love the water too! I actually can’t swim very well but I love being in the water and pretending like I am swimming! HAHA! I think it is really cool that you have been 5ks! Hope all is well.

  12. Hi Michaela!
I also am a swim coach! Although I haven't been since coming to college, I taught kids how to swim for about 5 years back in Edmond! I agree that it is definitely the most up and down job you can have! I always seem to get the kids that cry and scream the entire time but its worth it when they finally go under water or float on their own for the first time!!

  13. Hi, Michaela! First, I just want to say that you ROCK that haircut! I would absolutely look like a (very unattractive) boy if I tried to wear mine like that. Secondly, I hope you will thank your dad for his service from my family and me. My dad was also in the military, but he was in the reserves by the time I was born.
I couldn’t agree more about dogs being a part of the family! I grew up way outside of town, with no brothers or sisters or neighborhood kids to play with. My animals became my best buds. I did a semester at Colorado State, and I missed by dogs terribly. As a result, I pet literally every single dog I saw on campus (except service dogs, of course). I hope yours either live with you or you get to see them often! Sidenote: my parents have a corgi named Moose!
It was so nice getting to know you! I feel like we have a ton in common!! I hope the rest of your semester goes really well, and I hope you give your pups hugs from me.

  14. Hello! First and foremost, you are entirely correct: life is not complete without a dog. Dogs are everything good in the world wrapped up in a fuzzy (or sometimes not) bundle! I moved about every year as a kid so I can really relate on the family thing, too. It was always just me and my mom, though. Places come and go, friends make and fade but my mom has always been there. Your dogs (I'm all over the place, sorry) are absolutely gorgeous and adorable and the need to pet and cuddle them is so strong. Also, definitely can relate on the food thing. When my friends and I travel (I love to travel) I'm always in it for the food. They want to see the sights or explore the nightlife but me? Show me the food!

  15. Hey I really liked the introduction! I really liked the backdrop that you used too! It tells me that you are creative and makes me want to read your stories. I also love dogs. I grew up a dog person so its great to see others anytime for me! I could only imagine moving around in the military too, even if it were just one time. I moved schools eight times in Oklahoma before high school and transferred twice in college. There were some long hauls, but the big ones happened when I was grown. I couldn't imagine doing that state to state or internationally as a kid.

  16. Hi Michela!
Nice to meet you! Sounds like you have a pretty interesting and packed life! Hopefully you are getting to go to Italy in the spring still. That sounds like an awesome place to study abroad. I never got to study abroad while being a student at OU and still wish I would have. My roommate just recently got a puppy and its the first dog to have ever lived with me and he is definitely growing on me! Good luck with finals and next semester!

  17. Hello Michaela!

I really like your blog design! I was fortunate to study abroad two summers ago and it was the best thing I've ever done! It really helped me grow as a person. Great to meet you!

  18. Hey Michalea!
I really hope that you are able to go study abroad in Arezzo! I did it this past summer and it was the best experience of my life! I only spent a month there and I wish i could have spent longer. The Italian culture is just so rich and amazing and the food is to die for! Plus Arezzo is the absolute cutest town ever, if you go I'm gonna have to suggest that you go to Bar Stefano, it is the cutest coffee shop and the man who owns it is the sweetest guy ever!
